Charles River Photos from Cutler Park in
Dedhamto Commonwealth Avenue in Newton

The Charles River is an oasis in the suburban sprawl and winding highways west of Boston. The banks of much of the Charles in this area are owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, managed by the Metropolitan District Commission. These photographs show how development and the river environment can coexist, in large part because of land purchases for conservation and recreation in the early 20th century.

Looking north from Echo Bridge. The bridge is part of the Sudbury Aqueduct, constructed in about 1878 to convey water supply from the Sudbury Reservoir into Boston. Route 9 is in the background.

Between Cutler Park and Commonwealth Avenue, there are about 12 road crossings, 3 railroad crossings, 2 footbridges, and an aqueduct over the Charles River.
