Somerville residents enter Run of the Charles canoe and kayak race

Wicked Local Somerville, Friday, March 5, 2010

Somerville - John Rose and Laura Schneider, both of Somerville, are among early entries for the 28th Run of the Charles canoe and kayak race to take place Sunday, April 25, in Boston. The race benefits the Charles River Watershed Association (CWRA) and its efforts to protect the health, beauty and accessibility of the Charles River.

The race showcases the ongoing improvements in the Charles River while drawing approximately 1,500 paddlers and thousands of spectators to enjoy a day on the river. It features paddling races for all skill levels, from expert to novice. The $5,000 Professional Flatwater Canoe Marathon draws elite paddlers from across the United States and Canada. The 24-mile relay race draws corporate teams year after year due to the bonding experience it creates with co-workers, and the 19-mile, nine-mile and six-mile races bring out recreational paddlers ranging in age from 11 to 80.

While most participants are from Massachusetts, entries have already come in for paddlers in Canada, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and New York, with many other states expected.
The finish line festival, where some races begin and all races finish, will host daylong activities at DCR’s Artesani Park on Soldiers Field Road in Brighton. Vendors will showcase their products and talents. Face painters, balloon artists and others will offer entertainment to adults and children. Some activities charge a fee.

There will be a playground for children of all ages. The festival will also feature live music by the Dixieland-style New Orleans Jazz Band, food vendors and booth displays, as well as company picnics.

The Charles River Watershed Association is a nonprofit organization committed to protecting and enhancing the health, beauty and accessibility of the Charles River and its tributaries and watershed. Every government and private stakeholder in the watershed knows CRWA’s advocacy for environmental protection.
