CRWA in the NewsLetter: Forum was not to slam, but educateNeedham Times Thursday, November 17, 2005 Yes, the League of Women Voters' Fall Forum, "The Future of Needham's Water Supply," presented on Oct. 27 did celebrate a new policy toward water. The Needham Public Library and the Permanent Public Building Committee did decide to install a rainwater recovery system for roof runoff. The water will be used for irrigating library gardens and lawn. This choice to use clean, nonpotable water for irrigation, instead of treated water from our Water Treatment Facility, signals a new way to re-supply our groundwater. It is our groundwater that is being depleted, according to the MA Department of Environmental Protection and the Charles River Watershed Association. There are other water policies in our watershed that we would like to reconsider, too, such as Needham's use of MWRA water in the summer months to water our lawns. To have the Needham Times characterize the forum as slamming the town's water policies, "Town's water policy slammed at forum," Nov. 3, seems to be an overstatement. Needham deserves praise for how it maintains its water system and complies with present regulations. The LWV-Needham wants to educate citizens about what Needham has accomplished and about additional possibilities for enhancing our water conservation in the near future. Members of the LWV-Needham call this "reconsidering our water policies in the light of new realities." Those who would like to join in such a reconsideration are welcome to call me.
