In Memory of Rita Barron

Rita BarronOn August 30, former CRWA Executive Director Rita Barron passed away in Irving, Texas after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Dubbed the "Goddess of the Charles", Rita convinced many that the much polluted Charles was worth saving.

Rita is survived by her husband Leo Barron, son Leland, and daughter Heidi. For more information on the life of Rita Barron, please read CRWA Executive Director Bob Zimmerman's tribute or read the CRWA Rita Barron tribute brochure.

No services are planned and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Rita's memory may be made to the Charles River Watershed Association to support the Rita Barron Fellowship or CRWA's general work.

All contributions in memory of Rita Barron will be listed in CRWA's annual report.

Donate to the Rita Barron Fellowship

CRWA's Rita Barron Fellowship is named after Rita, to continue her tradition of mentoring new environmentalists. The program was inaugurated in 2005 through generous funding from the Harold Whitworth Pierce Charitable Trust. The yearlong fellowship offers graduate students in engineering and science a generous stipend and the opportunity to gain relevant work experience. CRWA Rita Barron Fellows contribute to CRWA's advanced approach to water and watershed science under the guidance of senior CRWA science and engineering staff. In honor of Rita, CRWA plans to maintain the fellowship in perpetuity. Your generous contributions will continue to support this fellowship.
