Water Resources Engineer/Hydrologist Job Description
CRWA is seeking a full-time highly qualified employee with a strong education and experience in water resource engineering and hydrology. Strong GIS skills are essential. Position requires team work, creativity and initiative. The successful candidate will be a critical component of CRWA’s science staff, and will be expected to take the lead on several major projects as well as providing scientific and technical support for numerous programs.
Job Description / Activities:
The position offers a unique opportunity to undertake creative technical work on water-related issues in an influential environmental organization. CRWA’s work environment and small staff allow for creative and diverse assignments and the opportunity to work on meaningful environmental projects. The successful candidate will work with CRWA’s team using engineering and design to change how water functions in the urban and suburban environment.
Programs and activities include:
~ Smart Sewering Program: CRWA is involved in several projects to evaluate alternatives models for wastewater management that will promote smart growth, restore water balance and protect water resources. The successful candidate will manage these projects, and be expected to perform significant data collection and analysis, plus work closely with municipal officials.
~ Stormwater Trading Project: CRWA is developing a web-based trading program to help municipalities and private property owners comply with new stormwater regulations. The project team includes a web design firm. The successful candidate will manage this project, automate data acquisition, develop the databases, develop stormwater BMP design calculations, and provide an understanding to the regulated community of compliance with stormwater permits.
~ Blue Cities Program: CRWA’s science team works to research, design, and implement innovative approaches to urban and suburban water infrastructure and land use, focused in particular on the use of green infrastructure. Projects range from site to watershed-scale, and include early planning analysis and conceptual design through final design. The successful candidate will support the Blue Cities team and will assess watershed conditions including hydrology, soils, land use, topography, and infrastructure; be familiar with stormwater models; assess and design stormwater BMPs; and be able to "speak the language" of design and watershed restoration.
Qualifications
- MS or PhD in water-related field (Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Hydrology, Water Resources Science/Management, or Watershed Science)
- Strong GIS skills, including the ability to generate and work with complex databases, and perform modeling and analysis within GIS
- Strong foundation in urban hydrology, especially water supply, wastewater, and stormwater management
- Proficiency in water quality/quantity modeling at the watershed or site scale
- Strong spreadsheet and database skills, ability to work with complex data, automation of data-related tasks.
- Strong scientific analysis, report writing and grant writing skills
- Project management experience; ability to manage budgets, staff, tasks, deliverables
- Flexibility, creativity and ability to meet deadlines
- Strong verbal presentation skills, and ability to translate complex concepts for a lay audience
- Experience with projects that require teamwork
- Ability to critically review permits for technical detail
- Ability to participate in stakeholder and community meetings outside of conventional work hours

CRWA's intern positions are open to all individuals currently pursuing or having recently obtained an undergraduate or graduate degree. CRWA gives preference to interns who have completed at least two years of study at the college level.
Charles River Cleanup Intern (Unpaid)
Job Description:
CRWA is seeking an intern for spring 2012 to help organize our Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup, taking place on April 14, 2012. This will be the 13th Annual Earth Day Cleanup and is the largest one day river cleanup in the nation! Last year’s cleanup took place across 22 communities and involved approximately 3000 volunteers. The project brought together many diverse people and groups, all with the same goal: to clean up the river and improve their local environment. The Cleanup Intern will spearhead coordination of this incredible event by working as Chairperson of the Cleanup Steering Committee, which has representatives from state and local organizations. Responsibilities include volunteer recruitment and communication, public relations and media outreach, logistics, and grant writing and fundraising. Our intern schedules are flexible within normal business hours, but we require a commitment of at least 20 hours per week. In many cases, interns have been able to coordinate these unpaid positions with their school programs so that they get college credit.

Social Media Intern (Unpaid)
Job Description:
CRWA seeks an intern for spring 2012 to work with staff to create a strategy for cohesive social media and other internet outreach. The social media intern will analyze our existing use of social media outlets to asses our online impacts. The intern will also research other successful organizations to help CRWA build an effective on-line outreach strategy. The social media intern will assist with implementation of the strategy and will create a social media handbook to assist in the implementation of the strategy by staff and other interns. The social media intern will also assist with outreach and marketing for the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup (see description above). Our intern schedules are flexible within normal business hours, but we require a commitment of at least 16 hours per week. In many cases, interns have been able to coordinate these unpaid positions with their school programs so that they get college credit.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with social media including Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and other social media platforms.
- Understanding of metrics used to measure reach with social media and other internet platforms. (Experience with Google Analytics or other tools a plus)
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Coursework or experience in publicity or marketing a plus.
- An interest in environmental/community issues.
- Comfortable working both independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.
- Currently enrolled in college or college graduate preferred.
- CRWA prefers candidates who are able to work at least 16 hours per week and make at least a three month commitment.
- Access to a car and valid driver’s license is helpful.

Landscape Design Intern (Unpaid)
CRWA seeks to hire an intern with a background in landscape design with strong graphics capabilities for spring 2012. CRWA’s programs require a facility for team work, self-motivation, and interest in implementing the concepts of environmental restoration and green design. Working hours are flexible, but candidates must be willing to commit 16-20 hours per week.
Job Description/Tasks:
~ Design of urban and suburban "water supportive" infrastructure and landscape projects, from site analysis to conceptual design
~ Preparation of graphics for handouts/brochures, newsletter articles and public presentations.
~ Research on a variety of topics. Common topics include emerging best management practices in stormwater design, Low Impact Development, LEED standards etc. Internet research, as well as site visits and literature reviews will be necessary for certain projects.
~ Compiling fact sheets as part of CRWA’s education, outreach and advocacy programs.
Desired Qualifications:
~ Design Skills: background in Landscape Architecture/ Design.
~ Graphic Skills: Adobe Suite (CS2 or greater) including Photoshop and InDesign; AutoCAD; knowledge of GIS (ArcMap) and Web design would also be beneficial.
~ Knowledge of Low Impact Development practices for stormwater management and interest in employing them creatively in the context of urban redevelopment projects
~ Writing ability
~ Research skills

Watershed Science Internships (Unpaid)
Description of Position:
CRWA is offering exciting internship positions for the winter/spring 2012 that focus on a variety of watershed protection tasks. (See www.charlesriver.org/projects.html for more information on current projects). Intern's responsibilities may include water quality monitoring, field work, sample bottle preparation, data entry and analysis, administrative tasks, science and/or internet research, and other related work. All internships are unpaid but in many cases, interns are able to coordinate these unpaid positions with their school programs to receive college credit. Internship schedules are flexible within normal business hours. The internship requires a commitment of at least 16 hours per week. Preference is given to candidates who are able to make at least a three month commitment.
Desired Qualifications:
- An interest in environmental and water issues, a willingness to learn
- A major or coursework in civil/environmental engineering, water resources, hydrology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field
- Access to a car and a valid driver’s license is helpful.

GIS Internship (Unpaid)
Description of Position:
CRWA is seeking an intern with a background in GIS and geospatial analyses to work at our fast-paced, environmental non-profit for the spring 2012. Intern responsibilities will include assisting with the development of a GIS Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), working as part of a team on various ongoing CRWA projects, including map making and geospatial. (See www.charlesriver.org/projects.html for more information on current projects). The intern may also be involved with research, administrative work, and data compilation. Internship schedules are flexible within normal business hours from Monday to Thursday. This internship requires a commitment of at least 10 hours a week. Preference is given to candidates who are able to make at least a three month commitment.
Desired qualifications:
- Graduate or undergraduate coursework in GIS.
- An interest in environmental and water issues, and a willingness to learn.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Access to a car and a valid driver's license is helpful.
