Shoreline Survey
In the spring of 2006, CRWA launched a volunteer-based
shoreline survey effort from Farm Road in Dover to the mouth of the
Charles at the New Charles River Dam in Boston. Click here
to view a map of the project area. The survey covered over
half of the 80-mile river corridor and document unmapped discharge pipes,
areas of significant erosion, habitat suitability and other indices of
stream health. Volunteer surveyors used maps, photographs and written
surveys to identify areas needing follow-up visual monitoring, water quality sampling and/or
mitigation. Click here to see what
surveyors observed (you must download GoogleEarth to view results).
Shoreline Survey Tasks
CRWA has completed evening training sessions for the
shoreline survey. Volunteers were required to attend one training
session to insure high quality data. Training
was provided by staff from the MA
Riverways "Adopt-a-Stream" program. The actual surveys,
about two hours in length, were conducted in April or May, and
scheduled around volunteers' schedules.
Volunteers walked or canoed between 1/2 and 1 1/2 miles for a survey time of 2 to 4 hours per group. Volunteers
filled out survey questions and maps indicating areas of potential non-point
source pollution for follow-up monitoring and water quality
sampling.
