Sawins Brook, Watertown, MA
"Find It and Fix It" Water Quality Monitoring

Summary

CRWA conducted water quality monitoring on Sawins Brook on four occasions: 1) November 9, 2006 – a wet weather monitoring event, 2) November 20, 2006 – a dry weather monitoring event, 3) December 12, 2006 – a dry weather monitoring event, and 4) May 25, 2007 – a dry weather monitoring event.

Samples were collected at seven or eight sites along Sawins Brook and analyzed for E. coli bacteria, total suspended solids, and total phosphorus.
Additionally, in-situ parameters, such as pH, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity and water temperature, were measured. Click here for a sampling map.

During all four monitoring events, E. coli levels at most of the monitoring locations exceeded the Massachusetts Surface Water Quality Standard for swimming, 126cfu/100mL, and a majority exceeded the state standard for boating, 630cfu/100mL.  The highest concentration of 8,600cfu/100mL occurred on the November 20th (dry weather monitoring that was affected by an earlier storm) and December 12th (dry weather) events. In addition, dissolved oxygen levels in the brook were relatively low during the first two monitoring events.
