1) Action Alert – 2009 MA Budget

At the start of this year’s legislative session, both the House and Senate are very busy with the 2009 Massachusetts operating budget as well as many other pieces of legislation. Thus, this is the perfect time to make your voice heard on any number of issues. Phone calls are the quickest and most effective way to communicate with your elected officials, and email and faxes are also good. Due to current security procedures, postal mail tends to be too slow to be effective.

There are a number of line items in the budget which are crucial for river and watershed protection. Please take a moment to contact your senator and/or representative to show your support for these issues! The items we are supporting include:

  • Increasing funding for DCR Stormwater Management
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • State and Urban Parks funding
  • Riverways program

For more information about these and other environmental line items, and guidelines on how to take action, in the 2009 budget, go to http://www.crwa.org/alert/2008/MAbudget.html

2) Spend time on the river this weekend!

Join us on Saturday at the 9th Annual Earth Day Charles River from 9am to 12pm helping pick up litter at sites all along the river (www.charlesriver.org/cleanup.html ) , or on Sunday paddling, cheering, or volunteering at Run of the Charles, North America’s largest canoe and kayak race (www.charlesriver.org/rotc/rotc.html ).
