Hello Charles River Friends!

With Fall upon us, we're happy to report that many exciting CRWA member and community events are just around the corner. The first two events, which are quickly approaching, should give you the opportunity to see the river from some completely new perspectives.

2003 FALL FISH LADDER CLEANUP
Saturday, September 27, 2003
9 AM - 3 PM
Moody Street Dam, Waltham (please sign up before the event)

This is your chance to get "inside" the river, and see how our anadromous fish feel in the spring as they make their way towards the headwaters to spawn. The Moody Street Dam fish ladder is in need of some maintenance to make the passage for the river herring a little less harrowing in the spring. DCR has drained the fish ladder, and a lot of debris has built up over the year. Cleaning the ladder will be strenuous work that will require lifting, climbing on ladders, and working in slippery conditions. But we think it's worth it if more herring can find their way back to the Charles next year!

Please dress appropriately, bring boots or waders if you have them, as well as drinking water and work gloves. We will provide lunch and drinks. For more information or to SIGN UP FOR THIS EVENT, please contact Ariel at CRWA at 781-788-0007 x200.

EVEN IF YOU CAN'T VOLUNTEER, WE STILL NEED EQUIPMENT TO GET THIS JOB DONE!

Items that we need *loaned* to us for the day include ladders (step or 4-foot ladders), rope, shovels and 5-gallon buckets. If you have any of this equipment, please contact Ariel at CRWA at 781-788-0007 x200.

For our River Friend members and over ($50 members and over), please join CRWA staff and naturalist Ralph Abele on the:

FALL FOLIAGE PADDLE
Monday (Columbus Day), October 13, 2003
10 AM to 3 PM
Meet at Charles River Canoe and Kayak, 2401 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA
(you must RSVP to attend)

Join us on a fun-filled fall foliage paddle down the lakes district portion of the Charles. Accompanying our paddlers will be CRWA naturalist Ralph Abele, who will delight us with the natural history of the Charles. We will paddle from CRWA’s old building to our new headquarters in Waltham, where we will have a picnic, play frisbee, and give tours of the new building. Later in the day, we will make the return trip up the river. Canoes will be provided (free) by Charles River Canoe and Kayak, or you are welcome to bring your own. Please dress appropriately - it can get cold on the water. The event is free to members, and there is a $5 suggested donation for lunch.

Call early since space is limited and you must RSVP to attend! Call 781-788-0007 x200 to reserve your spot now, or to upgrade your membership!
