3rd Annual Charles River Earth Day Cleanup

VOLUNTEERS READY FOR CHARLES RIVER SPRING CLEANING

Newton, MA …Over 1000 volunteers from communities, universities, and businesses along the Charles River are set to participate in the 3rd Annual Charles River Earth Day Cleanup on April 20th starting at 9 am.  Seeking to connect a wide array of communities located along the Charles, the cleanup will focus on more than twenty sites along 67 river miles from Boston to Bellingham.  Event organizers include Massachusetts Community Water Watch, Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), Clean Charles Coalition, State Senator Steve Tolman’s Office, Charles River Stream Teams, and the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC).

According to Pattie Weikert, one of the event’s organizers, “Cleanup events play an important role in raising awareness about water quality issues and gathering together all those interested in making a difference for their local waterways.  We are looking forward to building on the success of our past cleanups and hope to have even more volunteers involved this year.”  Anna Eleria, from CRWA, added, “The Charles River is an invaluable resource to Boston area communities and this event is an excellent opportunity to show your support for a cleaner Charles.”

Volunteers from 15 area colleges and universities, boathouse groups, neighborhood associations, scout troops, company employees, alumnae associations and civic activists, are among those participating in the cleanup this year.

All volunteers will receive t-shirts designed by a Massachusetts College of Art student.  Snacks for volunteers will be provided during the cleanup and at a post-cleanup party at Herter Park in Brighton.  The MDC and Home Depot will provide trash bags and other supplies.

Organizers are still seeking volunteers to participate in the cleanup.  Groups or individuals interested in volunteering in their area should call Pattie Weikert at (617) 879-7735 or email cleanup02@hotmail.com.
