STAFF AND BOARD


Executive Director

BobBOB ZIMMERMAN joined CRWA as Executive Director in January 1991. Under his direction, CRWA has initiated groundbreaking ecosystem analyses and land-planning studies, helped rewrite land and water regulation, developed restorative technologies, and won major battles over the Big Dig Charles River Crossing, Charles River parkland, and water and wastewater impacts. Member: Massachusetts Water Resources Commission, MIT Sea Grant College Program State and Industry Advisory Committee, Earth Share New England Board of Directors and Past President, Earth Share of American Board of Directors, MassDEP Fees and Programs Advisory Committee, and past elected member of the Littleton Board of Health. Prior to joining CRWA, he was a founder of, and headmaster for, the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, New York. He has degrees in history, English, and Middle English from Central Michigan University, and worked for two years as a consultant to the energy industry.


Deputy Director and General Counsel

MargaretMARGARET VAN DEUSEN, Esq. directs CRWA's advocacy and legislative work, focusing on water resource sustainability, instream flow, water quality, and aquatic habitat issues.  She leads CRWA’s multi-year campaign to reform water resource law, policy and practice in MA.  She brought the series of precedent-setting cases challenging MassDEP’s implementation of the MA Water Management Act, governing large water withdrawals, and provides legal support to other environmental organizations and citizens.  A member of the Massachusetts Bar, U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, and U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, she serves on numerous committees including MassDEP’s Water Resources Management Committee, the state’s Sustainable Water Resources Initiative Advisory Committee, the Longfellow Bridge Task Force and the MWRA Water Supply Citizens Advisory Committee.  Margaret graduated from Mount Holyoke College and received her J.D. from New York University School of Law.  Prior to joining CRWA she was a public defender, an Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental Protection Division, and a partner at Rubin and Rudman in Boston.


Director of Projects

KateKATE BOWDITCH directs all of CRWA's science projects. Over the past few years, she has focused extensively on CRWA's Blue Cities™ Initiative, building a strong staff team of designers, planners, engineers and scientists. She is responsible for CRWA's numerous science, research and modeling projects, including the Upper Charles River Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) project, water quality testing programs, and streamflow modeling efforts. She also coordinates CRWA's stormwater policy and regulatory programs, working in partnership with the Conservation Law Foundation to develop stronger state and federal programs to reduce stormwater pollution. Kate has been on staff at CRWA since 1994, and serves on many environmental community projects, including Brookline Conservation Commission (Vice Chair), Muddy River Oversight Committee (Chair, Water Quality Committee) and Boston's Complete Street Advisory Committee. She received her MA in Geography/Water Resources Management, Boston University and is a hydrologist by training.


Controller

SUZANNE CARLEO, BS Accounting, University of Minnesota. After serving as a Senior Auditor for KPMG Peat Marwick LLP and as a financial analyst for RBC Dain Rauscher, Inc., Ms. Carleo joined CRWA in April 2004. She oversees CRWA's financial activities including management of daily operating transactions, and preparation of financial statements.



Director of Blue Cities™

PallaviPALLAVI MANDE, BA Architecture, School of Habitat Studies, New Delhi, India; MPhil., Environment and Development, University of Cambridge, U.K.; Masters of Architecture and Urban Design, Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Ms. Mande has more than 15 years experience in urban design and environmental planning and has worked on inner city neighborhood revitalization in cities all over the U.S. She joined CRWA in July 2005 as an urban restoration specialist and is currently leading the Blue Cities™ Initiative at CRWA which includes the planning, design and implementation of a number of green infrastructure retrofit projects.  Apart from reviewing development projects within the watershed, her responsibilities include environmental and site assessments, zoning review, fieldwork and research on  Low Impact Development, Smart Growth and Sustainable Development. In addition to the above she is deeply involved in public education and outreach for generating awareness on urban restoration through organizing public forums involving a variety of stakeholders ranging from public agencies, institutions, private land owners/ developers and the resident community at large.


Watershed Scientist

JulieJULIE DYER WOOD, BA Mathematics, Boston College; MS Environmental Science, University of Massachusetts, Boston. At CRWA, Ms. Wood runs the field science program.  Additionally, she works on a variety of projects including our Blue Cities Initiative, advocacy and outreach, and the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup.  Prior to joining CRWA in 2006, Ms. Wood was an AmeriCorps volunteer with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources where she participated in stream surveying and restoration. She also worked as a Program Educator for the New England Aquarium.

Rita Barron Fellow

EliseELISE LEDUC, BA Biology, Williams College; Master of Environmental Management, Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University. Before coming to CRWA, Ms. Leduc worked with the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management, where she assisted the state with rewriting the Coastal and Estuarine Lands Conservation Program Plan. In addition, she has extensive experience in GIS analysis, environmental education, and wetland restoration. As the 2011 Rita Barron Fellow, she is working on the monthly water quality monitoring program, intern coordination, invasive water chestnut removal, potential dam removal and fish passage restoration projects, GIS, and more.

Office Administrator and Events Coordinator

AlexandraALEXANDRA ASH, BA Public Policy, University of Chicago.  Prior to joining CRWA, Ms. Ash served as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team at Woodland Community Land Trust in East Tennessee.  While there she established a volunteer water monitoring program, worked with volunteers to develop a community farmers and crafts market, and coordinated publicity.  She joined CRWA in January 2011 and manages the office, plans events, and coordinates publicity.
