Bruins Stars and Newspaper Chain Support 17th Run of the Charles

Defenseman Hal Gill and Goaltender Rob Tallas as Honorary Co-Chairmen of the 17th annual Run of the Charles Canoe and Kayak Race on April 25. Suburban World Newspapers will be covering the event as the Official Newspapers of the 1999 Run of the Charles.

Hal Gill, the 6'7" left-handed defenseman, joined the Boston Bruins organization as their eighth pick in the 1993 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Now in his second professional season, Gill won a Hockey East championship with the Providence College Friars in '95-'96 and played quarterback at Nashoba Regional High School, Westford. Gill is also spokesman for Future Bruins, the team's youth hockey program.

Joining Gill as honorary co-chairman, is back-up Goaltender Rob Tallas who was signed by the Bruins as a free agent in 1995. During the '97-'98 season, he allowed two goals or fewer in nine of his 12 decisions. An avid fisherman, Tallas values the work of CRWA in protecting and improving the health of the Charles River. "The cleaner the river, the better the fishing," noted Tallas.

"The Charles River is such an important asset to Boston and Massachusetts," said Gill. "We hope everyone will come out for a great day and exciting competition at the Run of the Charles."

You can follow Run of the Charles news in Suburban World Newspapers, which publishes seven weekly newspapers in eight towns within the Charles River watershed. The oldest paper in the Suburban World group is the Natick Bulletin, founded in 1865, followed by The Medfield Suburban Press (1922), The Needham Times (1932), and Dover-Sherborn Suburban Press (1956). The Westwood, Millis, and Norfolk Suburban Press weeklies, founded in the 1980s and 1990s, complete the Suburban World chain.

According to Suburban World Publisher William Barrett, "Our readers are concerned about the health and beauty of the Charles River, which runs through or borders every town we serve. We look forward to bringing our readers the latest news on the Run of the Charles this spring and including a Run of the Charles Supplement in our April 15th papers."

Sponsored by Boston Duck Tours with support from Boston Edison, the annual Run of the Charles Canoe & Kayak Race highlights improvements in the Charles River, drawing over 1400 participants and thousands of spectators to enjoy a day on the river. The Professional Flatwater Marathon draws elite paddlers from the United States and Canada, while the 24-Mile Relay Race and the 19-Mile, 9-Mile, and 6-Mile races draw corporate teams and recreational paddlers aged 12 and up. All the races finish at Herter Park on Soldiers Field Road in Allston with a daylong Finish Line Festival of music, food, raffles, displays, and award ceremonies. There is no admission charge for spectators.
