HELP US TACKLE THE GROWING PROBLEM OF AQUATIC INVASIVE PLANTS |
|
In the Lakes District and Lower Basin, invasive plants are on the verge of taking over the ecosystem, and will thrive even more with the warmer temperatures caused by climate change. If we allow them to continue to spread, habitat space for native species will continue to decline, oxygen in the river will deplete, and recreational users of the river will be at increased safety risk.
To address this prominent issue, DCR, in partnership with CRWA, has finalized a 5-year management plan to control aquatic invasive plants in the Charles River Lakes District and Lower Basin. The plan entails applying safe, low-dose herbicides to the river each summer to keep the invasive plant infestation at bay and protect native species and habitats. This management program is being implemented due to escalated concerns from the boating community and the rate at which aquatic plants are growing out of control.
CRWA was awarded a grant from DCR’s 2:1 Matching Fund Program. With the 2:1 match, DCR will designate a total of $50,000, per year, to go toward the 5-year management plan supporting herbicide treatment efforts. CRWA will raise an additional $25,000 per year to support our efforts in managing the grant program, coordinating with DCR and surrounding communities, providing public education and outreach, and in general ensuring that the aquatic invasive plants are addressed aggressively each year.

gift of stock
- Did you know that donating stock is one of the smartest ways to give — and it benefits you while supporting Charles River Watershed Association? Here’s why:
- Give 20% MORE with Stock: By donating stock that has appreciated for more than a year, a donor is actually able to give 20% more than if they sold that stock and then made a cash donation.
- SAVE on taxes: When you donate appreciated stock, you avoid capital gains tax on the growth in your stock’s value and can also deduct 100% of the total current value of your contribution – that’s tax savings two ways!

Qualified Charitable Distribution
- When planning your IRA withdrawal strategy, you may want to consider making charitable donations through a QCD. In addition to the benefits of giving to charity, a QCD excludes the amount donated from taxable income, which is unlike regular withdrawals from an IRA. Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the impact to certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare. If you are 70½ or older, you are eligible to make a QCD.

WHY GIVE TO CRWA? |
|
Over the past fifty years, the Charles River has had a remarkable resurgence. The river is now full of life. It is a source of recreation and a readily available connection to the natural world for Boston residents. It is home to hundreds of ecosystems and more than 8,000 acres of wetlands have been protected forever from development as part of the Natural Valley Storage Project.
This resurgence has caused a false sense of “mission accomplished.” The truth is that new and mounting pressures, due to a changing climate, are threatening the health of the Charles. For a river intertwined with 80 miles of bustling civilization, “clean” is not an endpoint, it’s a verb—and it’s our unwavering mission.
We’re ready for the challenge, but we need YOUR help.
Join us in our mission and invest in CRWA today! Give us the ability to develop and implement strategies based on science, advocacy, and the law to address these issues head-on with green infrastructure, water quality monitoring, education, policy changes, and more.
