Environmental Law and Policy Intern
CRWA's internship positions are open to all individuals who are looking to kick-start their career in water. Internships offer training in a variety of areas, including environmental science, climate resilience, advocacy, and education, and provide individuals an opportunity to be part of an exciting and dynamic team. If you have interests and/or experience that would relate to multiple internships, please indicate this in your cover letter. Our small organization works collaboratively across program areas. All internships are available to students earning academic credit or a stipend from an educational program to participate.
Internship Details:
Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) seeks an Environmental Law and Policy Intern during the academic year to work directly with our Legal Director and scientific and program staff. This is a unique opportunity to gain environmental advocacy experience at the federal, state, and local levels while shadowing all aspects of public interest legal practice. The Legal Intern will support CRWA’s legal and policy work by:
Conducting original research on emerging environmental topics.
Drafting legal memoranda to communicate research findings and legal conclusions.
Preparing documents such as comment letters, briefs, and research papers.
Participating in internal strategy sessions and project management meetings.
Attending external meetings with government officials and partner advocacy groups.
Drafting testimony and/or testifying on behalf of CRWA at public hearings.
Skills & Professional Development
Interns will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit environmental law, including:
Refining legal research and writing skills within a policy context.
Developing written and oral advocacy techniques.
Gaining exposure to the daily operations of a prominent advocacy organization.
Learning about current CRWA projects across the watershed.
Desired Skills and Experience
Education: Current 2L or 3L law student with a demonstrated interest in clean water, environmental justice, and/or climate resilience. Undergraduate coursework in environmental fields is a plus, but not required.
Research and Analysis: Strong legal research and analytical skills; ability to think critically and creatively about complex challenges.
Communication: Excellent writing skills and attention to detail.
Work Style: Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work independently.
Internship Details
Funding: This is an unpaid internship. Interns are expected to secure funding through their law school or external grants.
Schedule: Part-time (10 weeks) with flexible hours (minimum of 10 hours per week) during normal business operations.
Format: Hybrid (Boston office).
