Public Meeting: Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Draft Plan for the Charles River and Alewife Brook/Mystic River

  • Virtually Via Zoom (map)

SHOW UP TO SUPPORT A SEWAGE-FREE CHARLES RIVER!

On June 2, 2026, the Cities of Cambridge and Somerville and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will host a public meeting outlining their draft plan to address combined sewer overflows (CSOs).

It is important for the public to tune in to demonstrate that you care about this issue; please plan to attend. There will be no public comment at the meeting, but you can submit your thoughts online after the meeting and at any time over the next 5 months.

At this meeting, Cambridge, Somerville, and the MWRA will walk through their plan, which allows for continuous sewage discharges during long storms, which will become more common in the coming years, thanks to climate change.

The cost difference between this plan and a plan that would virtually eliminate sewage discharges? Less than a few dollars per household per month for most households in Greater Boston.

This plan is NOT final. State and federal regulators must still approve it. Our goal is to ensure they don’t approve this weak plan that spends your money on broken, polluting infrastructure.  MWRA, Cambridge, and Somerville must upgrade the system to one that actually stops the sewage discharges.
