Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 to October 15 was National Hispanic Heritage Month, a monthlong celebration of Hispanic history and culture! Here are just some of the activists with Hispanic heritage who have made invaluable contributions to the environmental movement:

  • Xiye Bastida, a Mexican-American climate justice and Indigenous rights advocate who was a major organizer of Fridays for Future, co-founder of the Re-Earth Initiative, and was recently named on the Forbes 30 Under 30 social impact list.

  • Mark Magaña, the Founding President & CEO of GreenLatinos, a community of Latinx champions for environmental, conservation, and climate justice who advocate for environmental justice and liberation.

  • Ana and Juan Parras, founders of the Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Service, a nonprofit dedicated to educating residents on environmental justice concerns and empowering individuals with applicable environmental laws and regulations.

  • Elizabeth Yeampierre, the first Latina chair of the EPA’s National Environmental Justice Advisory Council, founder of the NYC Climate Justice Youth Summit dedicated to helping young people of color understand the intersection of racial justice and climate change, and current executive director of UPROSE, Brooklyn’s oldest Latino CBO.

We are so grateful for the work done by these leaders and countless other scientists, activists, and community members with Hispanic heritage.
