Stormwater Planning Intern

CRWA's internship positions are open to all individuals who are looking to kick-start their career in water. Internships offer training in a variety of areas, including environmental science, climate resilience, advocacy, and education, and provide individuals with an opportunity to be part of an exciting and dynamic team. CRWA’s Stormwater Planning Internship will offer on-the-job training through a variety of grant-funded stormwater projects in support of our Stormwater Solutions program. The Stormwater Planning Intern will support community engagement and outreach, data visualization, report preparation, and outdoor research and data collection. The Intern may have opportunities to participate in additional tasks based on individual skills and interests. 

The Stormwater Solutions program advances sustainable stormwater management by providing technical assistance to partner communities and organizations, primarily through state grant-funded projects aiming to improve water quality, municipal infrastructure resilience, and community awareness. Our team works at the cutting edge of science and advocacy to develop emerging resiliency strategies like green infrastructure and climate adaptation policies. The Intern will be prepared to enter a fast-paced industry with the ability to effectively communicate sustainable stormwater management strategies.

Potential Skills Gained:

  • Learn about water quality and the impacts of modern development practices within an urban context

  • Professional experience working with a non-profit organization

  • Researching, writing, and presenting on environmental issues to a variety of audiences 

  • Preparation of graphics for handouts/brochures, newsletter articles, and public presentations for community education and outreach

  • Community engagement and education, including communicating technical information to a wide variety of audiences

  • Training and experience collecting and analyzing various water quality data

  • GIS experience in a real world setting (if candidate has had past GIS training)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Preliminary coursework in environmental science/engineering, environmental or urban planning, chemistry, biology or a related field

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, multilingual is a plus!

  • Detail oriented

  • Experience or interest in event planning

  • Ability to engage with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, past experience in customer service is a plus

  • Understanding of or willingness to learn high-level conceptual stormwater infrastructure designs

  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of settings and weather conditions

  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a plus, but not required

  • Access to a vehicle and valid driver’s license is a plus, but not required

  • Must be local, this is an in person position in Boston with travel required throughout the Charles River watershed
